In Greek mythology, Parthenope was one of the fabled sirens whose enchanting song lured sailors to treacherous rocks. When Odysseus resisted the sirens’ call, Parthenope’s sorrow drove her to cast herself into the sea, her body washing ashore near the site of what would become Naples.
